Last Minute Moving

In an ideal world, you have plenty of time to prepare for the move that you are planning. Moving is a stressful process with small details and tasks and to complete it you will need three or four weeks in advance. However, life can surprise you in the real world, and so can a last-minute move.

In this blog, Shark Movers can share some tips to help you with your emergency move.

Begin with the logistics

During last-minute moving, every task can seem extremely important and utterly difficult to complete. You can feel paralyzed by realizing how many things need to be done. It is better to take a deep breath and cross off items in your list, instead of letting moving tasks overwhelm you.

Firstly, you have to think about hiring a professional moving company or renting a truck. Both options depend on if you need professional help or you plan to move yourself. If you are going to hire professional movers in Toronto, the GTA or any region across Ontario, you won’t have much to research during your emergency moving. So, you can ask some of your acquaintances who have moving experience or read feedbacks on Google. We also shared some tips on how to choose the right moving company so that you can benefit from it. If you want to complete your move soon, it is important to sort out the logistics of your move sooner.

Plan your move

You should prepare the to-do list for your last-minute moving, once you hired professional movers or rented a moving truck. Prepare the moving checklists noting tasks that need to be completed. Next, you should organize tasks into the ones that need to be done now, in a week, or on a moving day, considering how much time you have left for the move. Preparing a checklist will guide you during the move and can reduce the stress of a last-minute move because you already know what things need to be completed and when.

Sell or donate the things you don’t need

The packing will be easier when you have fewer items to pack. Easy packing is vital with a last-minute move. Walk through every room, cabinet, and closet and pull out things you no longer need. Sort out these belongings into three categories: donate, recycle and throw away. When it comes to downsizing your belongings, it is important to think practically, not sentimentally. The moving process is great for editing down your belongings, and especially last-minute move gives you more opportunity to travel lightly. Don’t think about packing everything and sorting them out in your new home. It is better to sort out these items before the move and save your energy and time for more important matters.

Set up packing equipment

When you are having a emergency move, you don’t have plenty of time to search for bubble wrap or packing tape. You need to create a packing station in order to avoid that. You should gather your packing supplies and make sure they are on hand before packing. You will need the following supplies for packing:

  • Boxes
  • Scissors
  • Packing paper
  • Packing tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • Blanket
  • Stickers

You can create your station in the garage, the dining room table, or the guest bedroom. It is better to gather all packing supplies in one place and use it as a staging area. If you have enough space, bring your items to your packing station and pack them there. Don’t forget to label all the boxes, so that unpacking will become easier.

Ask for help

Moving is a big and stressful process, especially when it has to be completed in a short time. It is totally normal to turn to your family members or friends for some help. Having more helpers can help you stay on track and finish the job faster. Some time-consuming tasks like getting items dropped off for donation will get simpler when you have another person helping you. Make sure to show some appreciation by ordering a meal or just giving snacks.

Leave some tasks to the movers

One of the advantages of hiring professional movers is that you can get assistance when things are really down to the wire. If you hire movers, it is better to leave some tasks to them considering paying a bit more for the additional work. With last-minute moving, sometimes it is the best way to go.
